![]() ![]() JD: Shanghai has more and more designer boutiques. When the exhibition kicks off we’ll sell the items created by the designers online, with all the proceeds going to support a village primary school library. This activity will be a collaboration with the site Buy42, which is an online charity shop and NGO. We’ve invited a dozen designers to do a work based on a theme, and will invite a celebrity ambassador to take part as well. ![]() That’ll launch some time in September or October. T: Next up we’re thinking of doing a combination exhibition and charity event. JD: Can you tell us what you’ve got planned for your next activity? ![]() Sometimes business has its bright sides, like being able to bring together brand culture, history and stores. With things like our current Nina Ricci exhibition, we’re trying things that are a little more commercial, working in a few commercial elements. They hand-pick international designers while we’re a store that specializes in Chinese fashion designers - this is a perfect match. Like our collaboration with The Olive Shoppe. One thing we really want to do with Dong Liang is wrap lifestyle and culture up in what we do. We’ve done, I think, five or six since we opened. T: We have been holding special activities pretty often. Yuan jewelry (Image: Erica Ji for Jing Daily) Can you say a little about your exhibitions and activities? JD: We know that Dong Liang recently hosted a pop-up shop here in Shanghai in collaboration with The Olive Shoppe, and at the moment you’ve got a Nina Ricci “L’Air du Temps” fragrance exhibition going on. This month we’ll open our second store in Beijing, though, that’ll be about double the size of our first, so we should be able to hold some art exhibitions and try out some new concepts there. Since our Beijing store is quite small, we can’t have a lot of crossover activities within the shop, but we’ve got a dedicated area for that in Shanghai. Compared to the Beijing market, people in Shanghai pay more attention to materials and fit, and really prefer silk and fine fabrics.Īnother difference is that our Shanghai store is more lively. So it’s a bit harder to sell them something than it is when you’re dealing with a customer in Beijing, because you really have to convince them that the item has added value, that it’s something new and unique. They’re more individualistic in terms of how they think. Shanghai consumers are more clear about what they want and don’t want. ![]() I think the biggest difference between the cities, though, is that Shanghai is more mature. Our Beijing store in Wudaoying hutong is pretty small, so we can’t stock the same number of designers we can in Shanghai. Tasha (T): First off, the stores are different in terms of size and space. Aside from the fact that Shanghainese customers are generally more westernized, what would you say sets Beijing and Shanghai apart? Jing Daily (JD): Earlier, we were talking about how Dong Liang’s Beijing locations stock many Shanghai designers, while its Shanghai location stocks Beijing designers. Interview translated from the original Mandarin Chinese. Recently, Jing Daily Shanghai correspondent Erica Ji caught up with Tasha at Dong Liang’s location on Fumin Lu (an emerging hotspot of cutting-edge Chinese design) to discuss the differences between the Shanghai and Beijing, some of her favorite home-grown Chinese designer brands, and the particularities of the local market. It also struggled with the compound word “throne-rooms,” opting to only translate half of it. However, Translate translates this to tribunales in Italian – a word used in the context of courts of law. ![]() For example, the text used for translation testing uses the word “court” to refer to a type of area within a building. In terms of general accuracy, our experts found it to be pretty good for nailing sentence structure but it could often present some confusing results from having a vocabulary that is too general. However, casual users may not know this exists without stumbling upon it. On-device mode is perhaps the main point of frustration, as being able to download languages so you can use Translate without a connection is extremely useful. As with other Apple-made iOS apps, you have to venture out of the app and into Settings to tweak some more complex elements.Īdmittedly, there isn’t a whole lot of further functionality to be had here – simply letting you allow Translate to function using mobile data and the option for an on-device mode. However, there is more to this app, and that’s where a degree of hassle creeps in. In the Italian translation, Google slipped up on the gender of some words while in Spanish it muddled the meaning of some sentences. Throughout My Language Lab’s testing of these apps, the company utilised an extract from The Art and Architecture of Islam 650-1250 by Richard Ettinghausen and Oleg Grabar for analysis purposes, with a focus on Italian and Spanish translation capabilities. But what good are these features if the translations aren’t necessarily up to snuff? My Language Lab found Google Translate’s translations to be broadly accurate but spotted some errors, especially relating to morphology (the structure and composition of the words in the sentence) and word gender. Google Translate has lots of features, especially for a free app. ![]() The more complex settings allow for specific tweaks, such as allowing offensive words, choosing specific regions for certain languages and turning on offline translation. If you're looking at it purely as a free to play game, Castaway Paradise is a lot of fun, though how often it prompts you to watch ads (albeit for double rewards or other useful things) may irk some players. you already have unlimited water and stamina, though you'll still have to wait for timers and levels to unlock everything. The Steam version doesn't offer this, largely because you don't need it. You can ignore this, pay a monthly fee, or pay a flat fee and keep the status forever. If you're playing the mobile version, the game actually has the option for you to become a VIP, which is a subscription that gives you some free bonus items, access to special things in the catalog, discounts, and unlimited water and stamina. The blocky yet cuddly design is easy on the eyes and big on character and colour, making it one of those games that makes it hard to stay in a bad mood while you're playing. It's less designed for marathon sessions than to drop in on whenever you feel like it, and things like digging for shells or planting specific flowers to attract different bugs assures plenty to fiddle with even with you're not decorating your house or the town as a whole. Though the tone and style is just about perfect for kids, it's funny and engaging enough for players of any age. The island opens up a lot more as you find puzzle pieces, which grants you access to different characters and establishments. It's the sort of game that's made for whatever time you want out of it, and toddling around tweaking the town with decorations or catching things to give to the museum is pretty relaxing. Castaway Paradise is very low-key and casual, and frankly, I like it that way. You'll fish, you'll catch bugs, you'll farm, you'll get yelled at by an angry ape. For the most part, it's pretty apt, though while the seasons and events on Castaway Island do change over time, it's not quite as dynamic as Animal Crossing where its population is concerned. Steam users don't need to buy anything extra, having already paid for the game, and have permanent unlimited water and stamina, too!Ĭastaway Paradise's influences are pretty clear, enough so that "It's like Animal Crossing!" is actually mentioned in the official site's subtitle and Google description. Whether you're playing on a computer or a mobile device, most things in Castaway Paradise still take time. Level up, and you'll get a smattering of useful items, and unlock more content as you go. Most folk will have tasks for you to accomplish and will reward you accordingly, and completing objectives as well as generally puttering about will gain you experience points. Some items can only be used so many times before you need to wait for their stamina to refill, or on a mobile device, watch a short ad to refill it immediately. Even with a 15-Mbps broadband connection (ample for HD streaming), we generally experienced five-second buffering delays when changing from one Sling TV channel to another. You probably will notice a lag when you change channels. After all, how often are you watching the same TV program from two different sources at once? But it does raise the curious possibility that while you're watching a big basketball game on ESPN you could hear raucous cheering from your neighbors' house only to discover- two minutes later-that the fuss was abut a mind-blowing, buzzer-beating, game-winning three-pointer. Truth be told, most subscribers to Sling TV would never notice the delay. We expect the perceived delay will be significantly reduced over time." Since Sling TV is a new service, we have chosen to be conservative in our signal delay to allow for congestion or other potential Internet propagation delays. They all have delay from the time of content was captured and produced to the time a viewer sees the signal. "Television signals of all types are never truly live. We asked the Sling TV spokesperson about the delay, and got this explanation: We even tried it at the home of a staff editor who subscribes to Dish Network's satellite service and found Sling TV to be running about a minute behind the company's own feed from space. Side by side, we found that Sling TV was running one to two minutes behind the programming on Optimum cable. ![]() The most striking difference we saw between the cable and Sling TV feeds was one of latency. The organizational logic makes a lot more sense than assigning arbitrary numbers to channels, but its difficult to know how it would scale beyond the dozen or so channels currently on Sling TV. On Sling TV, channels have no number and instead are grouped by type (Sports, Family, News, etc.). ![]() Navigating Sling TV is a bit of a departure from the standard-issue cable and satellite service numerical channel guide. We also wanted to try it on an Amazon Fire TV, but the apps for Amazon devices weren't ready during our trial. We tried Sling TV on a Roku 3, an iPad 2 and an iPad mini. If you want to watch Sling TV on your television, you might need to spend $40 to $100 for a streaming media player, but that's still a significant savings over the multiyear cost of a DVR or a cable box. It should also work on Android and Apple iOS devices. At launch, Sling TV should work with streaming media players from Amazon and Roku as well as with the Xbox One, Google Nexus Player, and smart TVs from LG and Samsung. Like many other streaming video services, Sling TV works through an app that you can install on multiple devices. No launch date for Sling TV has been announced, but the company assured us it's coming soon. Premium channels, such as HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime, are also unavailable on Sling TV. Sling TV doesn't include any of the broadcast networks, so you'll need to hook an antenna up to your TV to get ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Sling TV is the closest service yet to à-la-carte cable television. ![]() This $30-a-month package is incredibly tempting for anyone who's ever wondered why they're paying $50 and up (plus a monthly fee for a cable box) to get hundreds of channels when they watch only a few regularly. We tried the full suite of channels, which includes Sling TV's two $5-per-month add-ons: Kids Extra (Baby TV, Boomerang Disney Junior, Disney XD, and Duck TV) and News & Info Extra (Bloomberg, Cooking Channel, DIY, and HLN). The basic Sling TV package has 12 channels, including Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney Channel, ESPN and ESPN2, Food Network, TBS, and TNT-a cleverly designed list of some of the most popular basic-cable channels. ![]() ![]() ![]() Otherwise, by process of elimination (in context of this example, of course), we can make the assumption that the shape we are examining is a circle ( Lines 35 and 36).įinally, we return the identified shape to the calling method. If a contour has five vertices, we can label it as a pentagon ( Line 31 and 32). If the aspect ratio is ~1.0, then we are examining a square (since all sides have approximately equal length). To determine which, we compute the aspect ratio of the shape, which is simply the width of the contour bounding box divided by the height ( Lines 23 and 24). ![]() If a contour has four vertices, then it must be either a square or a rectangle ( Line 20). This algorithm is commonly known as the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm, or simply the split-and-merge algorithm.Ĭontour approximation is predicated on the assumption that a curve can be approximated by a series of short line segments. In order to perform shape detection, we’ll be using contour approximation.Īs the name suggests, contour approximation is an algorithm for reducing the number of points in a curve with a reduced set of points - thus the term approximation. We then have our detect method on Line 8 which requires only a single argument, c, the contour (i.e., outline) of the shape we are trying to identify. On Wednesday, she told the board that she posted on social media about "the fact that 'Rainbowland' wasn't going to be allowed (because) it was something that the public would be really concerned about, and that they were interested in knowing about it."Īfter a closed-session deliberation, the board unanimously voted for Tempel's termination 9-0 on the grounds that she violated three different school board policies. Officials also took issue with her handling of the incident by taking to social media.īut Tempel said she wanted her students to know they could make a difference, and she was "more talking to the public." The district argued she should have spoken directly with officials and instead caused safety concerns. In early April, Tempel was placed on leave. The administration recommended she be terminated for violating policies. Sebert said that while he does not take issue with Tempel's disagreement, he found the manner in which she expressed that sentiment to be "inappropriate" and "disruptive." "I thought the way in which she disagreed with this decision was in direct violation of multiple board policies," Sebert said at the hearing. ![]() Superintendent James Sebert also testified he received a deluge of inquiries from parents, community members and people outside the district, including threatening messages. He testified he and Ziegler discussed the theme of the concert - Earth and making a better world - and went through the song list, approving the song "Rainbow Connection." He also said officials agreed the school would need a large police presence when students returned from spring break. And he said he received "vulgar" messages, saying he would "get what's coming to (him)." Schneider testified he became the target of a flood of voicemail messages, raising concerns about his safety and that of the school community. Heyer Elementary Principal Mark Schneider told the board he never said to "veto" or "ban" the song. She also told WPR the district had not offered any specific reasons for the ban, but "the only common thread between those two songs was the word rainbow."Īt a lengthy hearing on Wednesday, the Waukesha School Board heard from school officials and a representative for Tempel regarding her actions and whether they violated district policy. She told news outlets, including Wisconsin Public Radio, that the Muppets' "Rainbow Connection" was initially banned but later accepted after pushback from parents and the Alliance for Education in Waukesha. Tempel raised her concerns on social media and received national attention. The lyrics were widely believed to focus on acceptance, but district officials said they found the song "could be deemed controversial." In late March, first grade dual-language teacher Melissa Tempel blasted the district after it excluded the song by Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton. A first grade teacher in Waukesha who publicly criticized the district over a decision to pull the song "Rainbowland" from a school concert has been fired. ![]() |
